Enjoy Lima and its surroundings by bicycle

Most Peru tours start in the capital Lima. But what is the best area to sleep in this huge city? Googling for a moment … What is immediately noticeable is that there are actually only two good options given in this metropolis: Miraflores and Barranco. These are both good and safe neighborhoods in Lima. Yet these two neighborhoods are quite different. Our personal preference goes to the artistic neighborhood of Barranco and in this blog we would like to tell you why.

Barranco is known as the creative district of Lima. It is originally a small village that has been drawn to the entire city of Lima over the years and there is still a cozy atmosphere. Barranco is a mecca if you like street art and is known for its art. When we were there last month, an art route was organized. The artists then held ‘open house’, very nice to take a look behind the scenes. The authenticity of the village has not yet been lost and, unlike Miraflores, there are no McDonalds and Burger King in Barranco. You will find a lot of hip coffee shops, nice restaurants and a nice square. Oh yes, and don’t forget  walk over the well-known bridge Puente de los Suspiros.

FALL IN LOVE WITH BARRANCO

The bohemian neighborhood of Lima is one of the most popular for its history, bars, huariques and criolla music shows. On this tour we will pass by the Park of Love, ride through picturesque streets, enjoy a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean by the boardwalk.

Bicycle route

We start from our location in Miraflores heading south, always on bike paths.

We passed through Kennedy Park or also called Cat Park.

We will arrive at the most romantic place in Lima: the park of love where we will appreciate the sculpture THE KISS by the Peruvian Victor Delfin. This place is similar to the Paque Guel in Barcelona and is due to the style that the Peruvian artist shares with his Spanish counterpart.

We will continue along the Miraflores boardwalk passing by the second most visited place after Machu Picchu: Larcomar shopping center. This shopping center is ideal to go for lunch or dinner and taste delicious Peruvian food. There are very good and renowned restaurants and cafes where you will also enjoy a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean.

We will arrive at the Barranco viewpoint located on Saez Peña street and we will contemplate the bay of Lima and the San Lorenzo islands and the fronton. Here we will tell you what these islands have in common with Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, California.

We will go a little further away from the cliffs to see the old colorful Barranquina houses and enjoy their late 19th century architecture with large wooden doors and windows. Here we will also enjoy the graffiti and see why Barranco is known as the bohemian and artistic neighborhood of Lima.
